quick question about refresh rates & drivers

in games, suppose my CRT supports a max of 85hz with vsync on (so max 85fps). with vync OFF how many fps do i get? unlimited?

also, will monitor drivers let windows know my crt's max refresh rates? or will it automatically detect that with plug n play drivers?

thanks.

Your refresh rate is limited by your Monitor and your Graphics card - primarily your Monitor as today's Graphics cards are capable of supporting very high refresh rates.

Vsync just synchronizes the Graphics Card output to your Monitor refresh rate. Disabling Vsync will not enable your Monitor to exceed it's refresh rate capacity.

If the Drivers you have recognize your Monitor, it should display refresh rates available for the specified resolution. There is usually an option to have Windows just display modes your Monitor can support.

so would my refresh rate capacity be the same with and without vsync on?
