Quick question about Opt 175..

After reading the forums, i've decided to buy the Opteron 175..
Question is where should I buy it from and OEM or Retail?

People are reporting good stepping, I believe 0530 for the 165 and 170 .. but they are both out of stock.. so I figured.. maybe.. since the 175 are still in stock that they will be the 0530..

Please suggest.

Im also getting the DFI LanParty Expert

Always buy retail to insure your stuff was'nt a return.. trivial for vendor to resell OEM's as new, it's happened. Plus you get a pretty decent HSF.. worth $20 minimum if you wish to sell... then there's the warranty factor..

BTW I've never seen a 0530 165.. not saying they don't exist but I've never seen one.

Edit: OTOH i just checked... it's a huge price difference right now OEM vs. BOX.. maybe i'd go OEM.

I was thinking of getting the OEM because its cheaper and because I am getting the SI-120. Is there no warranty for the OEM?
So do you think Newegg is a good place to buy from? In regards to the stepping.

Well OEM is vendor warrantied so it depends on vendor 15-90 days depending.

$475 vs $520... I'd prolly get retail at those price levels.. since as a percentage it's a small insurance fee.

I'm not too keen on stepping availability but your logic is sound. I'm ordered another Opty a 170 this time, hoping for 2800Mhz since my 165 failed to achieve. hate to have to get into 175.. in fact I wont.. I'll order a 3800 if this fails:D

Too rich for my blood.. poor price/performance etc. You may want to venture over to xtremesystems.org and see what they are saying about the latest purchases and what coming out of vendors stepping wise.. Hurry though if you want a opteron 939 since they will dry up by jan according informed people.

Its 520 Retail and 475 OEM.
I didn't want to wait because I wanted 0530. People reporting them from Newegg and recieved them 2 days ago. Now the 170 and 165 are sold out but 175 were instock. I am hoping that they are 0530.
They had 170 in stock at Monarch but they were 0541 0534 .. something like that.
Plus people on forums say that they do not update their stock so I dont know if they are actually in stock so I went with NewEgg's fast shipping. :)
I know its not the best choice to buy 175 but I'm hoping its not a super stupid decision.
Should get it in 2 days.

I think Monarch has the CABYE 0541 steppings. I have only been able to get 2655ghz stable at a good bit of voltage. They don't appear to be the monster OC'ers that some others are.

What would be a good #?

Right now, apparantly monarch is contacting their warehouse, and it will ship in 1-2 buisness days.

My 175 is here from NEW EGG. Purchased on TUESDAY of this week. Too bad Im at work. Hoping for a good stepping. ;)

just to let whomever know about the warranty:

try getting AMD to support an OEM chip. won't happen. I'm an AMD Partner and System Builder. I alone have the float the warranty on the OEM chips since they're supposed to be part of integration packages.

i'm expecting a few 175s to come in in the next few days. :)

I ordered my second on on Wed (2 day shipping but they sent it on Thurs :|). Let me know what stepping you got and if you ordered OEM or Retail!

Go it Thursday. Opt 175 0543.
People at Xtreme Systems had really good OC with the 0543 Opt 170, but the one guy who had the 175 0543 is capped at 2.6.. so far don't look so good.
Hopefully that was just s dud.
Can't test my yet, still waiting to buy DFI Expert and OCZ EB pc4000. Will buy this weekend when its availavble at newegg.

I ended up with a 175 0541 OEM from monarch a few days after Thanksgiving. The had a short period of time where they had it for 440 and the retail was around 500. Went with it instead of getting the 170 that was about 70 cheaper, hoping that they had a chit load of the 175's with the 0530 stepping. Good thing I don't bet on football or horses...but will see what happens. Oh yea, I couldn't get it to post so I rma'd and am anxious to see what turns up.

In regards to the 1xx, they are getting high 2's with many at 3 even a couple with 3.1...2.6 or 2.7 is pretty much a given.

I have that same stepping...best I could do stable was 2655 @ ~1.592v :( One core could go much higher and the other just wouldn't go which is why i have another on order and this one now resides in my media center PC.
