Quick question about IDE performance

Space is tight in my aria so I'm running my dvd drive as the slave with the hard drive as master on the primary IDE channel. What kind of performance loss is there in this setup? I really haven't noticed any difference so far, loading apps, playing dvd's, etc seems just as fast as when I used seperate IDE channels for hd's and opticals. TIA.

I think you answered your own question. 🙂

Well, a single IDE channel has more than enough bandwidth for a typical 7200rpm hard drive and an optical drive. (Assuming 100MB/s of IDE bandwidth)

The optical drive won't slow down the hard drive's transfer rate any. That used to be the case years ago, but not anymore.

Besides, even 16MB/s is more than enough for an optical drive's transfers.

IS-10 manual does not specify on this issue but newer Abit boards do specify in their manuals:

"Keep away from connecting one legacy slow speed drive, like CD-ROM, together with another hard drive on the same IDE channel; this will drop your integral system performance."
