Quick question about Hosting/Domains

I am really new to hosting and domaind and such, so excuse my newbieness 😛

So basic overview, You pay a register to register a domain, www.whatever.com and then you pay for hosting, which hosts your site correct?

Is there a particular order in purchasing? Should you have a domain before a host or vice versa?

What is a subdomain?

How would I upload files and sites to my host?

Hosting services will generally help you register a domain. subdomains arent all that important for people using a hosting service. But look up information on DNS for more information about them. As far as uploading files, look for a host that offers scp, any host that only offers FTP is asking to get hacked.

I see, so what exactly are subdomains?


Also I am currently register a name with Godaddy and it asks for information for billing, technical,administrative and registrant, I know i am the Regisitrant but what about the other fields? Would it be my information as well?

If documentation on DNS couldnt explain what subdomains are I wont be able to do it. www.anandtech.com could be a subdomain. www1.www.anandtech.com would be a host on a subdomain (www.anandtech.com may be considered a subdomain Im not positive). Like I said, RTFM. 🙂

You would probably be all of those, so just fill it out for yourself.

Yeah, just put in your own info. Domain names are pretty simple, however, the pain in the butt is DNS. That's what gets you every time! Since you're new to the game, you might find the site in my signature useful to you.
