Quick question about GC68 @SVC

I checked the system properties on my friends computer and it says he has a Athlon 995 Mhz. His HSF is extremely loud.. and so I was wondering if the GC68 at SVC.com would be able to go on his cpu/mobo. Here is a link to it.

The GC68 is rated up to an XP1800+, so I would think it would be adequate for an Athlon 1ghz. However, I think the older Athlons run a little hotter than today's XP chips, so I'd would get more feedback before I buy.

Go for it, it's a great little heatsink as well as the GC69 is too.

im was running that with the SVC fan that comes (or came, if it doesnt) with it which not too loud and not quiet either. its a 80mm h/s and a LOT quieter than the STANDARD 60mm delta. you can always put a better/louder or quiter fan on there.

if the gc69 is the all copper one, I would go with that, more performance


EDIT: forgot to mention I was also running a 1ghz athlon, idle temps 93-95F, and 113-116 load and I have pretty good airflow (have a 120mm panaflo at the front of the case and two 80's at the rear)

Yeah, go for the GC68. Be careful if you are considering the GC69, it

is slightly wider at the base so in tight installations, you may prefer to use the GC68

. That is a direct quote from the SVC site. Keep it in mind. I have run the GC68 on a few systems with excellent results. For a budget HSF, it provides excellent results. I have had it on a 1.33 Athlon before and it was fine.

Should work just fine. Be sure it will fit, however. Any tall capacitors near the socket and you're pooched, without performing surgery on the heatsink.

Woprks fine on AMD XP 2000+ as well.

I don't think that will be a problem unless they go for the GC69. I have installed the GC68 on at least three different boards with no trouble at all. No "surgery" needed whatsoever. (MSI, ASUS & EPOX)

That observation was from personal experience with a soyo sy-k7vta, which has a very tall cap near the socket. Nothing a little dremel work didn't cure completely, but I like to give folks the heads up, just in case. Not everybody has a dremel.

I have run this heatsink on a Duron 600, 1ghz Tbird (266), and XP 1600+ and it performed well on all 3. You should have no problems at all using it on that processor. If you do go with the GC69, be aware the clip is fun. If you install it on an ECS k7s5a you may have some issues getting 2 sticks of DDR ram in, but it can be done.

Couple GC questions...

1 - what's the material on the GC68/9? The pics look like aluminum, just wanted to be sure.

2 - any idea what these things weigh?

3 - I'm currently running a POS Thermaltake 6cu. Am I likely to notice any performance gain?

4 - I'm running the Tbird 1.4, which is one of the hottest Athlon chips around. I'm a quiet-case nut, so I'm using a Vantec Stealth 80mm, which only just keeps up on my 6cu. D'you figure the GCs would work?

1) GC68 is aluminum. GC69 I'm not sure of. I thought I heard mention that it might have some copper but I could be confusing it with another. I do know that it is bigger than the GC68 so that should be taken into consideration when buying.

2) The GC68 is not heavy at all. Don't know about the GC69 but logic would say it would be slightly heavier. However, even at that it shouldn't be a concern.

3) If the logic that a POS Thermaltake 7 is better than a 6 stands, then yes. You can view a "roundup" of coolers, including the GC68 on this site. The charts you want are on pages 7 & 8.

4) See link in #3. I would go for the GC69 if you have room around the CPU but there's a good chance that either would improve things. In the above testing, the GC68 really shined and only was beaten by the AX-7. Hey, for about $11 or 12 more you could get one of those and I KNOW that would work! 😛
