If I were to get a Dell Laptop, it would probably be refurbed. Why? The prior user has fried or broken somethig that was flimsy/defective and it has already gotten replaced/upgraded.
My brother bought a new Dell Inspiron (1500?) and I warned him, "you have 8 weeks or 8 months then something will happen to it". His room mates thought his was cool, and they both bought one as well. 8 1/2 months has passed, my brothers onboard LAN is fried, 1 guys PCMIA slot is fried, and the third guys has had issues with the screen.
Not meant to be a Dell bashing reply, but I personally never had much luck with Dell or their support team on 7+ systems. You may save a bit from the refurb shop, but I would invest in an extended warranty as well.
Look into Toshiba as well, their feature set seems to competitive.
Good luck with your purchase!
