I have a gigabyte 8ihxp mobo, and the new psu i got does not have an aux power connector. Do i need to have this connected to the mobo?

Well, the manual states
The 6-pin Aux. Power connector provides additional current to meet the board's +3.3VDC and +5VDC requirements.
And they go to the lengths of illustrating how to connect it on page 23. I'd play it safe and stick with a PSU that had the connector if it were me...

...or just use this as a good excuse to upgrade, and free myself from RDRAM.
