How many people even know how to "double clutch?"

I've tried it out and it's a slow process when you're learning how to do it on your own car. I don't want to do trial and error while blowing up my clutch and drivetrain. Don't have immediate access to a racetrack to practice at high speeds either.

Just wondering how many people use it once in awhile while driving in the city or highway?
 
I used to double clutch my old 89 Accord when the synchro starting failing in second gear. It kept the gears from clashing usually.
 
1,500,000 miles double clutching all gear shifts in my 18 wheeler.

Glad to be out of the truck and computing now,but I still have to maintain that CDL.
 
I once tried driving an old rig at work which needed double clutching. Its not fun in a 80,000lb vehicle.

Dammit, I've driven a stick for 5 years and even I don't know what double clutching is 🙁
 
Say you're shifting from 1st to 2nd, you push the clutch in of course, pull it into neutral let the clutch out, then clutch in into second, then clutch out. that worked on my Accord anyways.
 
I have to double-clutch 2nd and 3rd in my '92 Saturn (yep, good-ole' wrecked synchros). Better than getting the trannie rebuilt, though, and it made the car real cheap when I bought it... 🙂
 
Power shifting is when you shift without taking your foot off the throttle. Very bad for the clutch, U-joints/cv-joints, etc🙂

No what you are refering to is skipping a gear.

Double clutch is the method of releasing the tourque from the flywheel before you pull the shift lever out of gear.Then you release the pedal with the transmission momentarely in nuetral.You rengage the clutch,and then move into the next gear.

It is more detailed for a big truck. Many drivers of big rigs don't use the clutch at all unless they come to a complete stop.I figured if the truck gods made a clutch,I'ld use it.
 
Ok, I follow the steps, but I'm not mechanically competent enough figure out why you'd do it? 😕
 
I used to get a kick out of shifting without the clutch by matching rpms, but damn, if you misjudged it, you'd grind the hell out those gears!
 
Ok, I sort of follow now. It'd be the same thing as me cycling through the gears when the car is off and not having push in clutch...except you guys do it with the engine running.
 
The way I understand it, is that it gives the transmission enough time to slow down so that it won't clash with the flywheel, but I may be in the completely wrong ballpark on that one🙂
 
No vi_edit, I threw that part about running through the gears without using the clutch in there as a side note, has nothing to do with double-clutching, sorry for the confusion🙂
 
As long as my syncros are working why would I want too?

If I drive a vehicle that needs double-clutching I do.

Didn't think anyone but truckers worried about that nowadays.
 
Double Clutch: Only by accident
Power shift: Diesels take a while to wind down when you're in a hurry, sometimes my right foot is faster than my left
Clutchless shifting: only when the engine is off
 
This may sound stupid, but what does a clutch actually do, what is it shaped like😛 I only drop a manual once, and badly.. so i kinda know how to do it. I just want to know what it does.
 
With my new car - no way!

I know how and have used it for failing synchros. It is just not used in normal everyday driving.
 
Somebody is showing some age here, oops, could be me!

Downshifting, heel and toe double clutching and on and on were the main things the old sports car mags talked about. A nice skill to slow your car down if you are racing and setting a line but I always thought brakes were a lot cheaper to replace than clutches, transmissions, rear ends and u joints. Some of the older cars didnt have sycros on first so a rolling california stop was a good place to practice.

I was and still am a muscle car fan so my sporty friends didnt even want to talk to me just because my Vette blew them off the street.

Still drive a real car with 6 speeds and rear wheel drive and a big honkin V-8 but see no need to ever double clutch.
