One layer is a picture of your friend, the other layer is a starburst.

There should be no "Background" type information in either picture. That means the starbusrt should not be on a white (or any other colored) field, and there shouldn't be a wall or a sky or anything behind your friend.
 
Awesome, got it. Now when I move my friends head, the part that was originally covered by the mask is cropped. Is there any way to move his head around without screwing it up?

There's a little icon between the layer and it's mask in the laye's pallette that looks like a chain link. click that to turn it off, and you can move the layer without moving the mask.
