I'm going to be building a budget pc for my girlfriend (she's always harping to get on the computer when i'm gaming:D) and I wanted to know is 512mb ram sufficient for a pc that would just be doing some web surfing, music playing, and the occasional cd burning? Or should I go for 1gb to be safe?

512MB is totally fine for basic stuff. However 1GB shouldn't cost much more than 512MB these days so go for it if you got the cash.

Cousin Billy's XP is up to like over 150 MB's of RAM in default these days or something like that. Add to it antivirus and software firewall, open a couple of browser windows, a couple of IM's going and a simple card game going on and you'll quickly eat that 512 and more. If at that point, she decides to listen to some music on Media player, things are gonna get slow around the house... until she sees you loading that coop that is!

Also, a Gig will help Cousin Billy get his act together faster on booty time and opening things like Excel and Word.

And a Gig is just so cheap that life is just too short these days. Get the Gig and she'll think you're elfin magic with building PC's!

F'N hilarious. Ok It's decided then, i'm gonna go for the gig. hmmm. . . . now it's time to decide if I want to go 2x512 or a gig stick?? I've looked, they're pretty much the same price.

I am only a beginner but wouldn't it depend on the motherboard model and wether your looking for dual channel? I would presonally go with the 2X512 that way if 1 goes bad you got the other one.

512 is fine if your really on a budget. but you ask a bunch of computer geeks their opinion and generally "more is better" logic is what you are going to find.
