Quick memory question

I have this problem i have about 670mb of free memory... im running 2x512mb of ram...

i checked the running processes im only using about 175mb of memory... where did the other 180 go... does windows use up that much memory???
just seems odd

What are the computer's specs? Did you get the comp from Dell, HP, Gateway, etc? I would suspect it most likely to be integrated graphics or viruses.

Have you run antispyware/virus stuff on the machine? It would be nice to completely eliminate that as a possibility.

yes virus and spyware scan came up nothing... ive seen this on more than one of the machines ive built...

you are being very vague so its hard to tell what the problem is. edit your OP with a lot more information, like what major programs you installed, the system specs, if you messed with the swap file, etc.

windows eats up 220megs easily. i have 1 gb ram on winxp running boinc/winfah/shareaza/mcafee internet security/etc and i usually have around 500-600mb left. right now i only have 221824kb available sincei have according to task manager 427688 worth of system cache. sorta annoying.

sorry i forgot about this thread...
i went and got a 1024 stick.. putting me up to 1.5gigs, and it made my memory run at 166mhz. I didnt understand why and i tried many things to fix it. nothing worked.

there both pc3200 sticks... i have a K8V-SE deluxe..

i contacted the makers of my ram.. and they told me theres a bug in my board that if i plug in more than a gig. it throttles down to 166... i wanna be able to run 2gigs at 200mhz... basically 2x1024mb

i have contacted them... no answer yet

If you run more then two sticks on socket 754 this happens.

im not sure if u read what i put correctly so ill put it in quotes "... i wanna be able to run 2gigs at 200mhz... basically 2x1024mb " thats 2 sticks... i was running 1.5gig with 2 sticks...
