Can someone remind me how to divide x^3 by x+1 using long division? I completely forget.

It works exactly the same way as normal division works.

Write it out by hand, and do it EXACTLY the same way you would work any other division problem.

Try it. You should get: x^2-x+1 with a remainder of -1/(x+1)
