Quick look at the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro

I've been looking for a new laptop for a long time and have narrowed my choices down to the following:
Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro
Acer S7
Sony Vaio Pro
HP Spectre 13

As you can probably see I'm looking for an ultrabook with a good IPS screen.

So I finally got to fool around a bit with the Yoga 2 Pro and I came away very impressed.

The entire ultrabook has a kind of rubbery feel to it. Not in a bad way though. It has some grip to it which makes it easy to handle. I like it. Also the hinge tension is just about right, it stays in any position with little effort and the screen isn't so heavy that it would tend to tip the keyboard back as happens with some of the lighter laptops. Also when closed the surfaces meet perfectly. That's important to me. There is a little bit of flex if you hold the laptop from one corner with the screen open. Just a tiny bit. Not enough to bother me.

The screen seems fantastic and I didn't notice the problem displaying yellow that many people are mentioning with this ultrabook.

Trackpad and buttons were smooth and responsive as was the touch screen.

$1200 for a 256GB SSD and 4500u processor seems like a pretty decent deal.

This will most likely be my next laptop.

Just thought I'd post my opinions on this unit in case anyone was interested.

Only downside I see from online reviews is the so-so battery life.

Also only 8gb ram. Which for people who work with virtual machines or other memory intensive programs won't like. If you only need 8gb ram then I agree, it's a very good option.

Definitely something to be aware of but I think for most people 8GB RAM hits the price/performance curve at the peak.

If you're going to be running VMs you'll want a better processor than any of these can offer. I'd assume if you're looking at an ultrabook, you're not going to be running many VMs at once.

If you haven't seen it yet, Lisa from MobileTechReview has a nice video about the Yoga Pro 2. Seems like a fine machine. Makes my UX31A seem old.

I have the exact model you're referring to. I'm pretty happy with it. The only major complaint I have is with UI scaling on the high-res screen. Adobe-based products (photoshop, flash) in particular don't scale at all. Additionally, in order to reset the UI scaling completely when you switch monitors, you have to log out and back in. Other than that, though, it is quite nice.

The yellow problem was mostly fixed in a firmware update. It's still not the most color-accurate IPS screen ever, but I'd say it's ok for anyone who isn't a pro photographer.

Amazing device; between the touchscreen, convertability, perfect size, lightness and the kick-ass resolution screen, everything about this thing makes sense. At the price you can get it for in the states it's just a steal.

My biggest concern would be the keyboard keys getting caught in tablet mode and flying off. Is that really not a concern people have?

Battery life would be the biggest killer for myself. Asus 301 is more interesting (with regards to battery life) but it cost an arm and a leg.

I was actually looking at the Yoga 2 Pro myself. I would probably go for the highest model with the 8GB ram, the i7 and the 512 SSD, I would be using it for work and at home.

I have seen people posting about issues with the wireless card, have you seen any problems? I currently have an Asus laptop with a terrible wireless card and I don't care to repeat the experience.

I'm glad to hear the display color issues have been addressed.

I also wondered if you had any opinions about using it as a tablet, and like Cali33350 said, the keys getting caught in tablet mode.

Hasn't been a problem. They had an update back in November that seems to have fixed most people's problems.
