I leave in minutes, so forgive grammar.

Is satellite better than modem? No DSL or cable here, where I am. What is the monthly cost? Equipment? How is it for gaming?

IF thats the one w/ satellite both ways, then yes it is good. Equipment costs range up to 800 dollars i believe and the monthly fees rack up to 70 a month. The bandwidth is close th 1.5mbit, but latency is not good as the other forms of broadband.

Unless the technology has been upgraded in the past, you actually need to be connected with both a modem and dish at the same time. You send with the modem and recieve with the dish.

So for gaming, well... no clue how the hell it would work out. I have always wondered what it would be like having two seperate pings :D

So yes, if you are going to get DirectPC make sure it goes both ways, otherwise getting it would be somewhat pointless.

Hardware runs in the $300-400 range, service fees for two-way satellite are around $80 a month. Bandwidth is typically up to 512kbps, but the latency sucks. You can pretty much expect 800+ ms pings.

Most 2-way satellite systems are $400 for the equipment, have a $200 mandatory install fee, a $100 one time setup fee, and run about $70 a month. Most have an average 400kbps connection. Trust me I've researched it, I live in the sticks.

EDIT: Like Viper said, ping times suck!

lol this is going to be a little ot, but where did you get Quick like a bunny from? the last time I heard it was from my manager at work and we got a good laugh out of it. But now that I think of it, it might be a regional thing

Thank you, everyone, for all the valuable information. Until they improve the technology, I will not be getting it. I'd give my left nut to get some broadband out here in the sticks, but it looks like I'll have to wait.

RWG, I've said the bunny thing for years. :) I believe it is regional, mainly to the east coast, although I am one of three people that I know of that uses it. I still don't know how half the population still does not know what "pop" is. (For all you westerners, pop=soda)
