I worked for HH Gregg (like Best Buy) about 7 years ago. My job application asks "Reason for leaving". When I applied and interviewed I was told I would be put into car audio. I was not. I was put up front to sell crappy boomboxes and didn't make shit for commission. I put up with it for 3 months then walked out one day, which was the day after Thanksgiving because I didn't make squat.

How would you word that on an application? I don't want to sound like a baby like "They lied to me. They didn't do what they said they'd do."

This is for a very good job that pays extremely well. I've since held my current job for almost 7 years so I doubt there's much focus on the old job but I still want to fill this application out in its entirety.

EDIT: Also, when they're asking for my old boss' names, will the first name suffice or should I try to contact the company to get their last names? I have three jobs from 7-13 years ago that I don't remember any last names.

"Seeking advancement"

Totally truthful reason, omits the circumstances (that you should not have created) that indicate you're a poor employee.

Don't do anything that shafts your employer like that again. You never know what will come back to bite you in the ass.

I like this.

I dont think places care about references from shit jobs 5+ years ago. Do places like Best Buy and McDonalds even have the same managers or same staff after 5 years? My friend is the top manager at a McDonalds, and he has worked in at least 4 different McDonalds locations in the past 5 years. It would be nearly impossible to get a reference out of him when his number and location change so often. Chains like Best Buy are also known to swap people between stores.

WTF why would you even put that job on your application?

I don't want to sound like a baby like "They lied to me. They didn't do what they said they'd do."

But just to be clear, it was because you were a cry-baby, right?
