Quick job application question

Is it unusual to ask that they don't contact your current employer unless a conditional offer is made? Is it generally assumed that they won't... or at least that they won't contact them till after an interview?

I don't think it's unusual. If you don't want them contacting your current employer, just state so.

I'd be real careful, unless you can trust your current boss to give you a decent verbal review.

A few places I've worked, the boss has sabotaged the attempt , to make sure that I didn't get the new job. So unless they are hinting that you should find a new job, they may make sure that you don't get a good recommendation from them.

really? people have actually sued for that. Infact, some companies have a policy on giving references.

It could, not legally, affect your chances. Lets say new potential boss interviews you for a job, you say please do not contact current employer, it may make them think you would do that to them. They are not supposed to judge that but lets be honest, they judge everything.

How would you ever prove it? It is against the law yet it still goes on.

I have always had success with telling my current boss I am looking for a 2nd job (only weekends, nights, summer) and would list him/her as my current supervisor. Then they hopefully would not fear losing you thus maybe a good review. . .
