Quick internet disconnects.

Thought this went under computer help more than networking.

Kind of long, cliffs at bottom:
Basically around Friday night last week my connection was resetting like every 10 minutes throughout the entire night. No reason why. Thought it was maybe a hiccup so I gave it a day to clear up and it didn't. Now I come to find out its not really resetting as it normally would. Basically there is a small interrupt that disconnects me from anything that requires a straight connection: AIM, Ventrilo, chat programs like CommFort and things like that. Never does it disconnect me from the internet entirely, when I am experiencing some lag or quick DC, I am still able to download things and connect to the tinernet.

So I disconnected the router and went straight to the comp. Still had the same issue, so I figured it must be my internet. Waited a few more days with the same issue and finally gave up and called my ISP [[COX]] they came out replaced a few headers and splitters, check the signal strength said it was kind of weak. Went outside but came back and said probably wasn't the problem. Anywho after he left, problem happened and still happens.

Now I thought maybe its my comp, so I have an onboard card so I got a PCI network card and the problem is STILL there.

So what I did just now is setup an AIM account on my other computer in my router network. I am monitoring it and it hasn't logged off once in 2 hours. So my guess is possibly the network cable? The only reason I havent replaced this is because I had to route a cable from my basement comp room upstairs to my computer. So I have to buy a long ethernet cable again. :[

Cliffs:
- DC's me periodically from AIM, Vent, etc. but not the internet. Quick interruption.
- Disconnected the router and plugged it in directly to my computer.
- Replaced NIC
- Cable company came out, couldn't figure it out.
- Other computer doesn't DC as far as I can tell.
- Haven't checked cable because it's a pain in the butt to route it through the basement, and it's long.

I'm thinking more towards the cable at this point. Any suggestions where I could avoid the pain in the ass of buying a new cable and routing it, would help. Lol.

No they didn't bother, said that the pings were fine. They pretty much just blamed everything on those programs I mentioned. Ahh it must be a problem with THEIR network then is what they said.

Bump, replaced the cable (CAT6) today and still getting it. I've ruled basically everything out but the modem.

But why would it DC me and not the other computer? I have also tried swapping network ports too.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the problem is probably coming from your computer, not the modem. If everything is working on the other computer in your network, that means that the problem is downstream of the router. It is possible that you bought a second faulty cable, so what I would do is take your computer to where the working computer is, and plug it into the same jack. If the problems persist, and using different NICs didn't solve your issue, I would try to boot off of a Knoppix CD or something to see if it is a problem with the OS, or if it has something to do with your hardware.

Does the problem happen in safe mode with networking?

I havent tried getting on safe mode, I could try that however. I doubt I would have a faulty cable again... as it took time last time for it to have problems. I did however, buy 2 cables just incase i needed to replace it again. Eh I guess I could try the other later, but not looking forward to it.

Not likely, but have you tried a different physical port on your router?

If so I think it's most likely your windows install that is causing the problem.

Do you have any firewalls on the computer? Have you tried disabling them? Do you have anything like peer guardian installed? Anything that could interrupt internet traffic? I know it was probably working before but software can get corrupted.

Yeah I have tried a different physical port on the router. Swapped it with the other computer, made no difference. I guess I could try to enable DMZ on this computer to see if that solves anything though.
Peerguardian2 - Disabled.
Windows Firewall - Disabled
Router Firewall - Disabled.

EDIT: I stayed on Safemode for like 17 minutes without any problems, I will leave it on before I goto bed tonight to see if I get any disconnects.

OK, so if safe mode has no problems, simply find out what causes issues in normal mode. Check my website (see my .sig) and you'll see what to do - just run MSConfig and go thru the listed steps...

but most likely it's a third-party firewall, antivirus, etc. issue. I'd keep your router setup the same, as that's clearly not the issue.

Well I just closed a bunch of processes, enabled DMZ, and other stuff and my connection has been stable for over an hour and a half.

I'm wondering about those processes [[not services]]. I think I disabled like 2 or 3, but I am not sure what they were. I'll catch em again next restart and write them down to see what they are. Do like, one at a time or whatever.
