Still looking for cheap AGP DVI video card recommendations. Don't game so don't need something powerful.

ATI and Matrox use to have repuatations for having the best 2D, but I am sure nVidia has caught up in most respects. ATI still has the best DVD decode acceleration I think.

ATI Radeon 9600 PRO is a decent all-around card.

Or get a dual-DVI version for a little more.

Edit: Just how cheap is cheap?

Am I going to notice any benefits from the Radeon 9600 over the Radeon 7000 if I don't play games? Dual DVI would be sweet, but not worth it until I get two LCDs...

Also, the Radeon 7000 has a DVI port and a VGA port. Does that mean it can run dual monitors on its own? I suppose I would like to get a card that can run dual monitors on its own.

Edit: 1600x1050 isn't on the list of supported resolutions for either of those cards. Is that important?

I bought a 2001fp and I hated it. The image was not sharp at all (I suffered from the screen door effect). Of course I was using dvi.

I returned it and got a Hyndai L90D+ for half the price and love it to death

I'm not sure. ATI doesn't list 1680x1050 as a supported resolution for the X300 but it most certainly operated at that resolution.

I say web browsing is better on a widescreen display for a few reasons:

1. 1050 vertical is more than enough to display a webpage
2. SCROLL WHEEL PEOPLE
3. Widescreen lets me have firefox on the left and my GAIM and a terminal on the right of it
4. Even if you really wanted a long ass webpage, you can use portrait mode.

Portrait mode is teh sh!t on widescreen 😀

And I have Desktop Sidebar, so I don't lose a lot of space like I would with 4:3 mode

Just called ATI's store, the guy didn't know anything. Tech support is a long distance call to Canada. Anyone know how I can find out for sure if certain ATI cards support 1680x1050?

The regular one is 1600x1200=1920000 pixels
Wide screen 1680x1050=1764000 pixels
So you lose only 80 pixels in width, and gain 150 in height, and you get 11% more pixels with a normal LCD.
That's what I would pick.

Some people don't care. I like the widescreen format better than a 4:3.

yea the extra few pixels are nothin since u lose ability to play games ws. and well, the pixel loss from playing movies just isin't cool on a normal screen.

Yeah, those 80 pixels are gonna make a huge difference
1050x1680 vs 1000x1600 on widescreen movies. Very little advantage for WS
1050x1400 vs 1200x1600 on 4:3 format videos. A big advantage for nonWS
As a general purpose monitor, non-ws is better.

To you.

You can lead a horse to water... 😉
