Quick fix for NOISE issues?

My computer is listed in my signature. All stock cooling. To me, the heatsink on the processor works damn good, and doesn't seem to be too loud.

Maybe someone can tell me which parts are probably making the most noise, and recommend some custom cooling solutions that are silent.

BTW, I am almost positive the case fans are the source of some noise.
 
^ good idea on powering down and unplugging the fans to check, this should be safe for a minute or two.

80mm fans do bring the noise. You can get Zalman Fanmates and try dialing them down as a cheap work-around, just keep an eye on temperatures to see how low is safe.

The 7800GT should be able to throttle the fan speed back when it's idling in 2D mode ... when it's in 3D, you should be too busy playing games to hear it. 🙂

80mm case fans are brutal, especially if they are normal or high speed ones. I'll never have anything smaller than 120mm in my computer if I can possibly avoid it.
 
try stopping fans with a pen or something. not the GPU or CPU fans but any other fan should be ok for a couple of seconds. the PSU won't die without a fan for a couple of seconds and nothing will happen without the case fans. i assume it is the PSU or case fans. replace case fans wih 120mm ones and replace that PSU. generic PSU's are never good.

I realize they are a little thicker than regular 80mm fans, but it wont matter much, there is room for them to come out more.

I am going to replace my PSU althogether, although not right now. I am going to buy all of the above stuff and see what that does before I replace the PSU. When I replace, I am getting:

Put the whole enchilada under the desk and the noise abatement will significant and fast.

I'd probably ditch the case and get one that supports 120mm fans as a starting point. There's only so much that you can do with 80mm fans while maintaining good airflow.

If you still want to give 80's a shot, then an alternative is getting an add-on fan controller or software and try tuning the existing fans.
