Of slight curiosity, what is the procedure for collection listings that get sold multiple times in terms of a credit report? Does each collection agency get to stay on the credit report, or do they get removed once they're sold off? (Note, I'm asking about intermediary account sales, not the original creditor)

They will stay on the report until the 7 year expiration or it is challenged.

Nothing forces the collector to report that they are not involved unless you challenge the accuracy

Okay, so given that, if they are no longer in (legal) possession of your debt, then you can call them up and tell them to remove it? (By call them up I mean write them a letter asking them to prove validity of debt, thereby forcing them to remove it)

Or are they entitled to leave it on your report stating it has been sold off to another collection agency for the duration of that 7 years? That's what I'm trying to figure out.

A certified letter challenging them will work.

However:

If you have more than one mouse dropping, it is better to contact the Credit reporting agency and challenge/dispute anything that you find in error.

They will do the dirty work and get back to you. If a company does not respond the to credit dispute they have to be dropped off the list.

Make sure that you check with all three agencies - they do not collaberate.
It is free once per year unless a problem is detected.
