quick cpu swap question

I am taking a XP1600+ and HSF from one MB and moving it to another. When I realease it will the CPU stay attached to the HSF so I can just drop it in the new board or will it separate? Should I just clean it up anyways?

It is a retail cpu with the OEM HSF. I did not apply anything at the time ... just used what was on it. I have some Ceramique to use for the new cpu but was unsure what will happen when I pull the old one off?

it will not stay attached. take off the heat sink. clean it up. pop out the chip, transfer it to the new machine. put your heat sink back on

if it had a thermal pad it may stick a little, but its a bad idea to expect it to stick while you move it.

if it _is_ a thermal pad, clean it off before using the ceramique. nothing metal to scrape it though, dont want to scratch the bottom of the heatsink

From what I have read, rubbing alcohol works. I think I read lighter fluid works too?

Lighter fluid works best if it's a thermal pad, acetone for thermal grease. After using lighter fluid to remove remains of pad, rinse with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl or ethanol 70% w/o any additives e.g. glycerine) to remove any traces of LF.
Be careful with the actone, it is a harsh solvent and highly flammable (LF is flammable too, but not as bad as acetone). You can find 100% acetone disguised as house-brand Nail Polish remover at stores like Target for cheap $$.

wouldn't it be tough to lift the ZIF lever without taking the HSF off?
