Quick Civ 4 question

Question :

Me and some friends are going to do a lan tonight and play civ 4. Someone else wants to play, but is coming later. How do we allow the AI to play the game until our friend gets here. And then take the AI's place ?

Do we just set one race as open ? Does it automatically play an open slot ? How does it work ? Or do we set it as AI ?
 
As long as you have an AI player in that slot, he can join in (playing from where the AI left off). When he arrives, save the game in progress and reload, entering the multiplayer lobby. Once he joins he can select which previous AI slot to take over. Have fun.. this game is too addictive.
