Quick chromecast question.

I'm going on holiday with the kids and I want to take some movies for them to watch in the evening.
What I want to do is just store the movies on my phone and play them on the TV at the place I'm staying.
I don't think that the place I'm going will have any wifi, will a chromecast let me do this or does it need to be connected to a wifi network?
If it doesn't what will work?

You need a wifi network. Maybe you could hotspot your phone and connect the chromecast to it? Though I don't know if that actually works, and your data usage may be high.

Your best bet is to use a wired solution. What device do you have?

I suppose I could take an old phone and set that up as a wifi hotspot and connect to a chromecast through that but that seems a really inelegant way of doing things.

I'd rather not use a MHL to HDMI adapter if I can avoid it.

Honestly I would do the wired adapter. Sure it's not as convenient as wireless, but there's no chance of buffering, no data usage, and no lag.

Also I meant using your S5 as the hotspot, and then connect the Chromecast to it. Not sure if that would work though.

I'm thinking that chromecast isn't the way to go for this. (which is a shame as I quite fancy buying one, I just don't have a use for one.)

It's a shame as I believe that the chromecast plays well with the Plex app which would have been perfect.

I might just have to go wired with an hdmi adapter.

I could have got a FireTV stick cheap and used the screen mirroring on that but I've already got a FireTV and really don't want another just for that.

Maybe I'll go low tech and burn a stack of dvds!

How is the FireTV stick going to work without wifi? How is it any different than the Chromecast in that scenario?

Chromecast is fantastic with Plex. You just need a wireless network to make it work. Same with all the other streaming sticks...

At our home I have my Plex server, and the three TV's in the house all have Chromecasts connected to them. So I just use Plex on my phone or tablet (or laptop if needed) and can stream to any TV. Plus I can go to a friend's house and stream my library to their Chromecast as well.

I think that the FireTV uses miracast for mirroring which is point-to-point so it shouldnt need a router or an internet connection. The phone connects directly to the stick.

I can see the utility of one when youre out and about (but the fact that chromecast needs a router and connection to the web seems to reduce that utility) but I'd rather run Plex directly on the stick rather than routing content across the web.
