Between Hitachi, Seagate and Western Digital, is there a hard drive maker I should definitely prefer or one I should definitely avoid. I need more storage but it's just for media files, so it doesn't need to be high performance.

In the Data recovery community Samsung is widely a favorite for reliability. Please don't take this as "These drives do not fail" It is just that seeing a Samsung come in for recovery is pretty rare compared to other manufacturers.

There is no safe hard drive, your best bet is to shoot for performance, and keep a backup.

What is Samsung's market share? Last time I saw numbers, Seagate had 41% of desktop market share and 61% of enterprise disk share. Seems like you would necessarily see more Seagate/WD drives since they each have 25%+ market share.
