I have this computer I'm working on for a guy, and I'm supposed to give it back to him tomorrow. He had the Klez virus and a couple others, so I installed a NIC in it, backed up his files to my computer, formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Win98. After reinstallation, I can reach shares on my computer but can't get out to the internet.

I live in a dorm with a DHCP server. Internet access should be fully automatic. I have verified that the computer has a valid IP address. What else could it be??

"Valid IP address"? It's getting the IP from the DHCP server correctly? Can you ping IP outside of the network? Can you connect to a web site using an IP address? (Use 64.58.79.230 (yahoo.com)) If so, your DNS settings are wrong. Check the subnet mask, you may need to put in the DNS address manually..

ditto

Or possibly, what type of DHCP server is the dorm running? I know I'm on rogers and their DHCP server hands out IP addresses to registered mac addresses. Probably not the case for you, but try what supersix mentioned.

So I was going to try what SuperSix mentioned, when all of a sudden Norton Antivirus informs me that liveupdate has updated my virus definitions. I think to myself, hmmm, that requires an internet connection. So I try to access a website and it works. I did uninstall/reinstall the NIC, although I don't see why that would matter since I could connect to my shares before.

I hate it when sh!t works for no reason. :frown:

Ah, but you have to love it at the same time. :)

This falls under the category of "computer voodoo"

Me and the techs at work actually sacrifice chickens and chant incantations to get sh!t to work sometimes.

No kidding. :p I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I can't count the number of times someone's called me to look at a problem only for it to be fixed when I get there. I generally wave my hands and make some magic sounds. :p
