My mom lost her Incredible, she thought she had left it in another state, and no one could find it, so she used the replacement policy on her account to get a new one.

She then found the old one a week or so later, so now she has two. She gave me the old one to play around with since I have little experience with Android.

Here is where activation comes into play;

My friend hates his Droid 1, and I want to give him the Incredible as a birthday present, but I have seen you guys say before that if the ESN is reported as lost or stolen it won't activate, or Verizon sends a hit squad or something. So, if my friend goes to activate this thing next week, what will happen?

Mom lost phone
Mom got new phone
Mom found old phone
Friend getting old phone
Verizon will... ?

Bad ESN, as it should be. She got a new one because it was lost -- if you could make this claim and still use the old one, the coverage would cost a hell of a lot more.

So there is no way to activate the phone?

There is, it's just very costly, as in full phone price costly. As it stands right now you have to have some intervention to get the ESN off the blacklist.

Alright, well I'll tell my friend that.

If your friend tries to activate the phone and provides ESN to Verizon, it should come up in their system as salvaged and replaced on your mom's warranty - they won't activate it. The cheapest way to do this would probably be taking it to MetroPCS and have flash it over to their service.

My friend is still under contract with Verizon as well, but understandably doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on an out of contract device.

What would happen if your Mom call Verizon and tell them she found her old phone and have that ESN off the blacklist ??
This is the biggest reason why I hate CDMA phones.

They would likely request that the found phone either be returned or discarded.

If the phone was still on contract when it was replaced, then Verizon did not recover the full cost of the phone from the fulfillment of the contract at the time it was written it off as a loss.

As I understand it, the phone will eventually drop off the system blacklist after some time has passed. But as to whether a CSR will manually remove it is anyone's guess.
