quick 5v mod question:

I have a molex connector connected directly, no header to a 75mm fan that is unbearably loud. I want to mod it to 5v.

This is just a matter of swapping the yellow and red wires on the molex around, right?

As I understand it, the red wire into the fan is connected to the 12v, which is red/yellow, and the 5v is yellow/red. So if I change it, that would mean the "12v" is connected to 5v and the 12v is not being used.
 
On a typical 4 pin molex computer connector there two power rails, the yellow carries 12V and the red carries 5V. The two black wires are ground. If you are on the yellow now, move it to the red and the fan will get 5V.

FYI, there are some fans that will not start at 5V, but I'll bet that smaller fan you have will be fine.
 
Oh shit, I just turned my computer on and it makes an absurdly loud squealing noise. I think I will be unplugging that fan.

You may be able to resurrect that fan. Peel the label off the back of the motor and use a toothpick to apply oil to the armature. 3 in 1, baby oil, mineral oil, any light oil will work. put the label back on to keep the dust out.
