1st interview... met direct boss and prospective coworkers... learned about position, asked questions about position and company.

2nd interview... met the boss of the boss of 1st interview.
met 2 other mgrs that report to this guy too...

3. supposed to meet with a guy that is a peer to the guy in the 2nd interview.

The question is, what kinds of questions when I'm offered to, can I ask... he doesn't know much about the position, since that took place during the 1st interview, which was at the subsidiary, and where all the guys in interviews 2 and 3 are in the parent company.

Should I stick to general questions like 'how do you gauge success'...

This is a IT position with a financial firm.

"Why are you wasting my time with 3 interviews? Do you have no idea what you are doing?"

"Is it all right to keep a pillow in my desk for naps?"

"Is there company policy against viewing internet pr0n at work?"
"There is? What if I bring in my own DVDs?"

But seriously, perhaps you could ask questions about the company, where it's heading, and/or what the long-term goals are for the IT section of the company in particular.

Ask if the 4th interview will be with a hot chick.

Seriously, ask the dude how his job/area/perspective is different from the peer you already talked to.

It sounds like you're interviewing for some management-type position, so you should gently but firmly take charge of the interview and show them that you can thrive in different situations with different people.

Why the previous guy left. Why the position was unfilled. What day to day responsibilities are.. yadda yadda yadda.

nah, see these are the questions that can be asked in the 1st one, since it was directly with the group i'll be working with...

this 3rd interview is with a guy rather far removed from the day to day scene... hence i asked what could be fair questions to ask...

No questions.

Just the statement:

"Show me the the money Jerry, show me the money!"
