questions regarding screen savers

Using a screen saver vs powering down monitor, is that related? Which is the most benefical/least harmful to my monitor? What is the main purpose of screen savers?

screen savers came about to help avoid "burn in " of the monitor. having the same image on a monitor for an extended time would burn it into the coating on the inside of the glass. so screen savers were invented to keep an ever changing picture alive for your viewing plesure.
powering down saves $$$ on your electrical bill , but niether one should harm it.

Screen savers are not necessary on modern monitors. An image won't "burn into" a reletively new monitor. Now they exist mainly as novelties. If you look around the web, you can find all sorts of crazy screen savers.
