Can anyone tell me what brand of laptops are the best right now? Are the amd processors still better than the intel? Who makes a laptop with a good combo of processor and video card? I was looking at HP and they have the amd athlon 4 laptops available, but trident video cards 🙁

IMO, I think that IBM makes the best laptops with Dell coming in second (model T23 and 8100, respectively). Those are geared mainly towards corporations, but the Dell Inspiron 8100 has a really good video card that can replace your desktop system if you're a gamer. Hope this helps.
 
I would say IBM too, and from my personal experience, I've been very satisfied with my Thinkpad T22. It is not the gaming machine (Savage IX video card), but for everything else it is perfect. Install any OS (Windows98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux RedHat 7.2, BeOS) and every single component works without any additional drivers or tweaking. And the best thing is that every OS never crashes!

At the same time my Thinkpad weights only 4.3 lbs, and that's considering 14.1" screen, DVD-ROM and Battery. Dell with the same configuration will weight about 6.5 ~7 lbs. Battery life on my Thinkpad is pretty good too and without extensive CPU usage my lappy will run for about 3~3.5 hours without charging the battery.

The HP Omnibook 6100 and the
HP Omnibook 500 are nice packages.

At least it has ATI Radeon. And that is a good thing.
The Dell Inspiron 4100 has been getting good reviews.
The Compaq Evo's have been getting good reviews.
And Sony is on the bleeding edge.

The killer is always the tradeoffs. If you want a
big screen, you sacrifice weight. If you want the
best 3D around, those usually have the big screen.

The best 3D stuff right now is the Geforce2Go stuff,
with the new Dell Inspiron 8100 now available with
the ATI Radeon 7500 Mobility. So for graphics, the
order is:

#1) ATI Radeon Mobility 7500
#2) NVIDIA Geforce2Go
#3) ATI Radeon Mobility

All that being said, I ordered an T-series IBM as
well. Since I have to run Linux, it's a good choice
for that. It's got a good balance of features.

Really you have to make a list of the features you
want. If 2 PC-CARD slots is a feature you want, then
that limits your choices. If 1400x1024 is something you
want, that limits your choices. If 4lbs or 6lbs are your
weight limits, that limits your choices.



 
You have many options, but I prefer Compaq. Check out the model 1800. Check ebay for some great prices.

so is it not that bad to get a laptop with an intel processor? Becuz it seems that nobody makes a good
laptop with a decent amd processor.

I bought Dell Inspiron4000 last summer, and while it's pretty good equipped, the actual overall design and build quality is no match to IBM (not even match to my older, 4 years old Toshiba Satellite Pro 435)... the chassis plastic is cheap and thin, if I'd ever drop it I'd think it would die instantly. Looks OK, but feels pretty flimsy and fragile once you have it in hand.

I will not repeat my mistake when I'll be buying next laptop; will pay more and get something else, most likely IBM.

 
it is very good to buy an intel processor laptops. Buying an AMD based laptop right now, is a complete waste of money. you get slower speed (they are still running 100bus sdram vs even the new celerons are just 256k 133fsb tualatins) , really bad chipsets like the sis 730 or the alladin magik 1 with video built in. and you get bad battery life, and more head (hence more noisy fan noise) . not to mention you will never get a light laptop under 6 pounds or so, since all the AMDs are the big 3 spindle machines (since well they have to be bigh since they generate so much heat). anyways, buy an intel laptop and just save yourself the trouble. if it was a desktop i'd say AMD but its a laptop

have you ever seen how many special options there are in a linux kernel config to deal with thinkpads' "unique" hardware?
