questions on tracking numbers!!

ok, i made a deal on anandtech, paid him half so far, he shipped it and gave me a tracking number. He said the post office guy said it will be working by the evening. but it still doesnt work.
how long does it usually take for tracking numbers to work?
 
Delivery confirmation status usually doesn't change until after it has been delivered, it doesn't show you it moving from place to place like UPS or FedEx.
 
its with ups, and it says the tracking number isnt in their database or somthin, like its not even a confirmed number
 
Unable to track shipment "** *** *** ** **** *** *".

UPS could not locate the shipment details for the tracking number you entered. Please make sure the tracking number you entered is valid and try again.
 
Sometimes it takes a few days for the number to get into the system. I have recieved tracking numbers 3 days before they show up in the UPS system.
