Questions on Lowering clock multiplier and clocking CPU at 133Mhz

What mobo and RAM would u guys recommed? How about mobos with the new KT133A chipset?? Anyway, i'm still curious, if I'm about to lower clock multiplier on 100Mhz and instead clocking it at 133Mhz, doesn't it mean I'm stressing out the CPU as the CPU is really designed to run only on 100Mhz..??

When running at 133 or 100MHz FSB with the same final CPU speed, the CPU gets stressed exactly the same.

However, 133 will naturally stress the motherboard and memory more tho!
 
Well, just say that I'm either using a PC-133 SDRAM or PC2100 DDR SDRAM, is there still any stressing out ??
WHat stress can a mobo get from doing all this? I still don't get it...
 
as long as you have a motherboard that is truly specified to run at 133 (this not being an engineering test for overclockers) it will be fine because the board will look after the correct speed of the pci and agp buses. amd chips are overclocking so well that you may even be able to raise the fsb with the same multiplier though.
 
If you are using a mobo with either a kt133a chipset, or a motherboard with support for DDR266, then there will be no undue stress on the motherboard. But, it must be understood, that higher speeds mean higher stress, which is why 133MHz will always be more stressful than 100MHz on a motherboard. However, with the motherboards DESIGNED for 133MHz operation, this is not a problem 🙂
 
no, nothing like that. Typically, if a motherboard is specced to run at 133MHz, and you push it up to or past around 160MHz, then you may shorten the lifespan of the motherboard a small amount. But other than that, I wouldn't worry if I were you. Get a KT133A motherboard, and you could run it safely at 150MHz -ish for years and years...!! 🙂

Well, you know what...
I thought of getting the top of line DDR rig,e.g. 1.2Ghz (133Mhz part), PC2100 DDR SDRAM, and Gigabyte 7A-DX (or some other DDR mobo)...
but after reading at some articles that DDR systems now are not much faster than any KT133A config, I had a second thought of buying a KT133A based mobo instead...

but here, I'm looking at long term investment, where I can use my comp for at least another 4-5 years...so I guess I got to buy the DDR mobo, but not many memory manufacturer sells PC2100 parts, if they do, it's so very expensive which makes me think thrice...

I would like to wait till next month even March I can say....but I think I gonna need it for my college work soon...

so any suggestions anyone??
 
Actually, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm building a system to last for 5-6 years (the duration of my degree) yet I am going to get a KT133A because they are based on the more mature KT133 and are actually cheaper and perform very admirably. I've never had a system for more than 3 years, so this is going to be strange 5 years down the track!!

I think that getting 256MB of good CAS2 PC133 will be far wiser than 128MB of CAS2.5 PC2100 DDR SDRAM at the moment, considering there is a negligible speed difference between the RAMs and the huge difference that the extra 128MB of PC133 makes.

P.S. That is, 256MB CAS2PC133 costs roughly the same as 128MB CAS2.5 PC2100.
 
if you are gonna buy a computer in the next well really 9 months or so (which i dont forsee i shift to anything faster than ddr) i seriously doubt you will notice in 3 years the 2% speed difference a ddr board would get you. Personally i've got a kt133 classic board, and there is no way i'd waste the time and money to even bother upgrading. I'll just wait till the k8, the amount of time and especially money you'll end up wasting for a insignificant amount of speed isn't worth it. 3 years from now a DDR board with a 1 ghz athlon will be slow , just like a kt133 or kt133 a with a 1ghz will be. Sure the ddr will be a fraction faster , but not enough that it wouldn't be painfully slow still (Well i'm assuming, then again at the current rate that software is using up pc speed, might not happen)

From my deduction, most of u guys suggest that I buy the KT133A based mobo, right?

Just get the KT133 or KT133A board now with plenty of memory. That should last you for a while but the thought of keeping it for 5 years may be tough. My suggestion: go a little cheaper now (AKA not a DDR) and save some money and in about 3 years, buy a new motherboard and new processor.
 
after endless search I just got 1.1GHz Athlon retail box for less than $250 inc. shipping...heh, kinda in hurry, quite regretting it now, should get a 1.2Ghz one, but paid already...haizzz...
anyway, anymore suggestion...?
 
the 1.2 GHz one is hardly faster, and may not overclock any better. get a KT 133A board, asus just shipped theirs, should be a great board. its about the same as DDR speed for less $ on current applications.

expecting your computer to keep you satisfied for 5 years is somewhat foolish. in 5 years stuff will be written specifically for p4s, sledgehammers, and itaniums. right now its written for p3s and celerons, and the athlon was designed to be very close to them from a software design perspective.

why are you selling your athlon?

You know what before I moved to California for my college, I just changed my old Pentium 100 system to a Duron 650 system a few months ago...I've had my that Pentium 100 system for like almost 5 years...
I'd like to hear what u've got to say...
keep in mind, I dun really play games too much...
 
I'd say go for a kt133a board.
I'm lovin this kt7a-raid I've got right now, man is it ever FAST 🙂

mysterio if you already have a duron 650, just keep the kt133 and buy a 1.0 - 1.2 ghz tbird. Its not worth the bother to change the board.
 
duh...how can I change when the comp is not here w/ me?
anyway, the duron system is for my family and now I'm schooling in different state, so I've got to buy a new one....
