Questions on Generators and backup batteries

During the blackout, I unplugged my computer's UPS (APC SmartUPS 1000VA) and plugged my lamps in it. I had the only lit window in my entire neighborhood. Unfortunately that only lasted 10 min or so because the battery was drained (maybe 40 min on a full battery).

I'm not expecting another blackout in a long time, but still I'm curious about what's available to power yourself. If I lived in a house, I could get one of these. Could they power a refrigerator and lights? ... oh and a computer? 😉 And since they use gasoline, they could last as long as they supply of gas lasts right? I believe the only option for apartment dwellers are backup batteries, which I think are so very limited. Are there any that can power a refrigerator? I tried (maybe stupidly) to power up my refrigerator with my UPS but it was a no go.
