4 bars is less than half way, and at 4 bars my z-680s (almost exactly the same as the z-5500) are at a good volume for listening. I'm using a audigy 2 zs and analog inputs

So sounds like space cow's speakers are normal then, eh?

Wait... this was watching a DVD movie in your ps2? (I'm so out of it, I only got a couple hours of sleep last night).

Also looks like you got a soundcard already. (I think I better go to bed before I hurt my brain).

If you want a digital conneciton to your speakers, the Chaintech AV-710 would be perfect for DVD movies with your z-5500s. (If for some reason you weren't happy with your SB)

Ok, I give up now. Goodnight everybody :p *falls asleep in chair*

lol... 4 full bars isn't so loud here. It's just "OK", meaning less loud than I usually listen to my music at night when people are sleeping upstairs. What could be doing this? I hope its not my system :(.

sounds like it's your system, unfortunately. the ps2 is just passing a digital stream through the toslink connector, so any deviation from the DD reference levels must be coming later in the signal chain: your amp/speakers.

What happens when you hook them up to a portable cd player or mp3 player or something?

(just to take all the computer variables out of the equation)

Another thing... I read that there was a way to increase the volume output by the ps2 for DVDs, but I haven't found the method of doing it.

There is a +1 and +2 setting from what I've gathered.

thanks, yeah I use that when it's connected to the tv, but it's grayed out when I use optical connection.

The only thing that might be an issue with being near a sub would be a display (like a regular tube tv or a CRT monitor).

A speaker on it will not be a problem.

The pod should also have no problems with the magnetic field from the sub.

yes ps2 output is very low, you can go into the menu (while watching a dvd) and raise it some.

man the bass is CRAZY!!! I used the Boston Acoustic's BASS TEST at 3/4 volume and 3/4 bass. The whole room shaked. I hope I didn't damage my speakers, I really didn't think it would be so loud... Is it normal for these speakers to emit a small "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound when your at say a foot from them? Think it's when I did my stupid move that it did that? Do you guys think I damaged my speakers? How do I know?

Well, sounds like you've got them working at the correct volume now :p

Is the "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound only when you turn them up? Does it increase/decrease when you change the volume?

Some things to check would be:
Make sure things like "line-in" and "mic" are muted in your soundcard
Make sure your computer and speakers are going off the same outlet (google "ground loop problem")
Reduce windows volume to below 100% if you have it up all the way and increase speaker volume to compensate

the shhhhh will simply be static or white noise, normally you should only get something like that at really high volume setting....however if its happening at low volumes too you may well have damaged something....
the other possibilites could be you are running one of the cables too close to something it shouldnt be run close too....and its getting interference.....

i remember when i bought my REL Quake subwoofer, its the baby in REL's very impressive lineup (still set me back £350..lol) it came with a crappy low level phono cable for the LFE channel.....and when i hooked it up to my surround amp, even on a low setting the hum was unbearable, the cable wasnt just not shielded, it was thin as the wire itself, a bare 0.5mm of plastic coating...lol
So i went back to ask, and they said thats all you get with it, with their more expensive models (the £700 Strata5 i have now) you get a decent hi-level neutrik speakon connection, but u still gotta buy a low level phono...lol.....ended up forking uot £40 for a 5metre Qudos....nice tho, triple shielded, no hum, even at loud levels when no sound coming thru the system :)

I don't understand something... When watching DVDs on my PS2, I set my volume to half (maybe a bit more) and its still not loud enough. I checked in the ps2 options and I see "DVD PLAYBACK VOLUME" under Sound optical out but the top two options are blue "can be changed" but the "DVD PLAYBACK VOLUME" is gray "can't be changed". I tried stopping the movie then tryed it again... SAME THING :(.

Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.
