Questions concerning the XPS and the future

I am getting a desktop replacement laptop during this summer before school starts again in August.

I really like the XPS's from Dell cuz i think it would be perfect for what I need (gaming/cad/portability) But I do have a few questions about them.

1. Is the XPS planning on getting the Core Duo anytime soon? Right now it has up to a 2.2 Pentium M.

2. Would it be better to get 1 or 2 gigs of ram for a laptop? I've got 1 gig now in my desktop and it seems to handle most things ... would more ram chew up battery life faster?

3. Then my question about the future is that should I just wait and skip (yonah) and wait for Memon to come out to the XPS? or is the difference not going to be all that huge.

Thanks.

1. The XPS will likely get Core Duo processors very soon. I'm surprised it hasn't already!

2. Having more RAM is even more important in a laptop than in a desktop. Most laptops have slower hard drives than do desktops (typically 5400 RPM versus 7200), so they suffer more when a program runs out of free RAM and has to access the hard drive. Having 2 GB would cut down on a lot of this access. Moreover, it would actually improve battery life; disk access consumes much more energy than RAM access does.

3. You don't have to sit and wait for Merom (that's not due until late summer or early fall, which is too late for you), but I would definitely ensure that any laptop you get has a Core Duo processor in it. It improves responsiveness if you're the kind to run multiple programs at once. Games are also taking increasing advantage of multiple processors. You could see a huge difference in performance playing UT2K7 on a Core Duo versus a higher-clocked Pentium M.

awsome ..... you covered it all !

I have one last question ..... is the Core Duo 64-bit compatable? I am asking because of Vista that is to be released later this year/next - Or is Vista going to come as both 32/64 bit varities?

Yonah - no. Merom - yes. All versions of Vista will come in 32- and 64-bit flavors.

Your only viable option for 64-bit on a notebook right now is Turion.

Well there's some wacky folks putting FX-60s in laptops...but not viable for 64-bit.

The Core Duo XPS should be out this week, shipping in May. All the dell websites already have it listed (with a 7900GS or 7900GTX) except for the US one.
