Questions about XBOX mod chips

My spouse asked me to post this for him:

I would like to put a mod-chip in my son's XBOX, but there are dozens to choose from. Which mod would be ideal for adding Windows Media Center connectivity? I'd like to be able to stream movies over LAN and use XBOX to watch them. Also, I don't want to affect normal game-play.

I see prices from $10 to $80. What's the difference?

I know that someone is going to suggest going to one of the xbox mod sites (which I have been digging through). I would just like to get some personal experience from anyone who has gotten their XBOX to connect to Windows Media Center.

I thought the Windows Media Center-like connectivity was based on the dashboard, XBMC, and not the modchip.

soft mod, you can get a all in one cd somewhere I think ?
been awhile since I did it, I had to use some USB cable though to get the HD lock code and some eeprom stuff to swap my HD

pretty sure there are easy one cd things now a days though that will do everything for you. I could be wrong though.

of course with XBMC - check out xbox scene and the XBMC wiki.

There is no need to buy an xbox modchip anymore, it can be softmodded much easier.

You just need an original copy of 007 Agent under fire, Splinter Cell or Mech Assault (not the game of the year or platinum hits additions) and a memory card.

also I think you should keep in mind that once you mod it whether softmod or modchip you will pretty much kiss xbox live goodbye unless things have changed recently...but with xlink kai on XBMC it isn't that big of a loss - especially if you don't have or use live in the first place, the benefits outweigh the loss of live.

Is Xlink Kai that good? How many people are on Xlink?

Not worried about xb live because we can't get broadband here anyway. Stuck on dialup because of our property's location ATM.

Just softmod it. Much easier and free!
Search "How to Softmod Your Xbox Using XboxHDM" in google. First result.

Not bad. How's the quality of service (amount of lag) compared to Xbox Live?

I would buy an Xecuter 2.3 mod chip. This way you can play on Live if desired. Also would use Firefvckers installer disk.

Ok--the softmod thing was going well until I tried to unlock by hotswapping. This is a V1.6 so most of the exploits have been closed and it just doesn't want to unlock. Am going to give the DuoX2 a try. Thanks...

Softmods are easy, cheap, but will affect XBox Live.

Just about any modchip will let you do everything else and play on Live, but require a bit more skill to install.

Well, he's given up on the mod for now because he's getting this for $75 from a guy at work: http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=318 (the last few posts were by Mr. Bryophyte/Fermilevel). Thanks for your help, everyone. He'll come back and re-read the thread if he decides to return to the xbox mod.
