Questions about UCLA

How hard is it to get in and how's the internet connection there? I really want to go there and want to know more about the college. Thanks

Getting in:
Engineering = very difficult
Film = very difficult
Music (depends on what) = difficult - very difficult
Other stuff = moderately difficult

Classes:
"There's always some smart foreign kid that doesn't speak English very well and gets a perfect score that jacks up the curve"

Internet connection:
In De Neve = suck
Everywhere else = decent (although MP3 traffic is "disabled" until at least 2002)

Cell Phones:
Verizon = good
Everything else = suck

Internet connection in courtside last year = suck most of the time
saxon this year = most sites suck, some are ok, mp3 downloads are filtered...

oh ya and Nextel cell phone service works very good too, i had AT&T last year, basically no service...

hard to get in? should try to get the highest gpa and sat possible. typically people are over 4.00 and people are in 1300's sat's. also take the sat ii's, try to get 700's to be safe. everything totally depends what major you're going in as.

internet connection is currectly restricted as they're rebuilding the network hopefully to get on the internet2 backbone by jan. its not as bad now as it was in the beginning of the year.

i'm getting good service in sunset with at&t. it was really bad with sprint last year. cingular sucks, especially after 9pm.

freeasia, thx for the input, i seem to be ok so far but am waiting for my SAT II scores from November and I have signed up for December already just in case. I'm thinking about going into economics. Anything I should look out for? What are the general speeds on internet? Will my days of downloading off of kazaa and audiogalaxy be over 🙂? Thanks

audiogalaxy (i just use the ftp search) is fine. dunno about kazaa but morpheus doesn't work at all for me. i'll try again at the beginning of winter quarter. hopefully the restrictions will be lifted.

EDIT: if you're for SURE going in as econ apply undeclared to the social sciences. only if you know for sure you don't want to be an engineer, architect, music major or film school, apply undeclared. your chances of being admitted are much higher. then when you get here, take all the pre req's, ACE THEM, and apply for the major.

hmm....what if i'm not sure I want to major in econ? I'm just heading towards that way right now because I'm enjoying econ at school right now...How hard is it to switch majors?

p.s. thx for all the help freeasia

Not really...

My Cingular service worked perfectly fine.

INTERNET CONNECTION, DOES NOT EXIST
if you want to dl mp3/ mpeg, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS
I REPEAT DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS,
(you've been warned, biggest mistake of my life, thinking i'd get fast connection just cuz i'm living in dorms w/ a 'network' conection.)
MY att WORKS fine too!

switching majors really isn't a problem UNLESS you want to go into one of the speciality schools or have progressed really far in your academic career, i.e. you're already a junior and want to change to math, which would take tons of years to finish.

going in undeclared you can try on whatever major you want until you find one you like and officially declare.

as for living on campus, i liked it. its all what you make of it. the net was a lot faster last year. this year they restricted a lot of the bandwidth. its always slow the first two weeks because all the freshmen are downloading like crazy. yeah the food sucks after awhile but you don't have to make it. that's the one perk of it i guess. 🙂 i'm a student leader for my dorm so i'm very into dorm life i guess... shows my bias.

Live in the highrises the first year. It's a must for the true college experience. Then after that, move to the suites or go apartments. Do not be afraid of apartment buildings south of Wilshire; they are bigger and are more cost effective in terms of size. There is a shuttle that runs from a bus stop south of Wilshire to many places on campus. Very convenient. And it's only 20 min walk from my apt to Boelter (the main engineering building). I used to walk to school in high school, so 20 min isn't much.

Good luck.

I would rather recommend living on campus.
Was in sproul last year and internet rocked.
Are you sure you are using the * right sources* to d/l stuff.
The biggest advantage of living on campus is the food. No matter how much people say its bad or whatever, its not, rather its pretty good. Much more convenient than cooking yourself or eating out (i.e. if you live in an apt).

shaka: where's your apt? i want to move out for my fourth year if i'm not an RA and i really don't want to live near campus unless i have to. i'm thinking south of wilshire/santa monica.

they are working on the connection..
new backbone, even wireless is comming soon

im hearing that its harder and harder to get in, but the freshmen still seem just as dumb as when i was one... hheh

the school is pretty kewl, i like it alot.. you should take one of those tour thingies to see if you like it..
i get along with alot of people here

good luck!

go bruins!

"There's always some smart foreign kid that doesn't speak English very well and gets a perfect score that jacks up the curve"

that's cuz a lot of em freakin' cheat...especially those students from Hong Kong...i've seen it with my own eyes.

i wish someone had told me to live in the high rises my first year. man courtside sucked as a freshman. I don tknow how hard it is to get into engineering, but i think its pretty competitive now. they let you know when you get in in february though, instead of march, since if you dont get invited to the open house you are not in.

and cingular still sucks south of wilshire, the apartments are nice here and cheaper, and there is street parking but its really quiet. which i dont really like that much its wierd.

freesia39:

I live on Rochester Ave, about 2 blocks south of Wilshire. I wish I had moved here my 3rd year, instead of this hole in the wall in 747 Gayley Ave. I seriously do not recommend anyone live at 747 Gayley Ave. unless you like to live in a closet sized room. I shared a 2 bdrm 2bath with 3 other guys and it was so damned small I almost cried everytime I had to go home. We were paying $2000/month for it too. Damn that sucked.

My apartment now is about 3 times as large. Each of the 2 bedrooms is larger than the living room of my previous apartment. We pay $1995/month.

The only crap ass thing about the building I'm living in is there are a bunch of senior citizens living nearby and if we make too much noise past their bedtime (I estimate it's around 10pm), they call the cops on us. It's happened twice already and really, we weren't making much noise. It is kinda funny when they get pissed off and start yelling out their window "Hey, people are trying to sleep." It's funny, it really is.

My old apartment at 747 Gayley was a haven for party goers. There'd be a loud party down the hall every week (on thursday of course) and no one would complain. There would be vomit in the elevators once in a while. The halls smelled of dried beer. Oh damn, if only I was 21 last year; I could've had some nice parties.

So, south of wilshire = whisper or else get busted for noise. North of wilshire (esp gayley, strathmore area) = haven for parties. This is a generalization though. I have some friends in the apartment building across from my current building and they don't seem to have any problems with noise complaints. So, YMMV. Just ask around about buildings before you decide to live there.

I'll stop ranting now. I have a networking program to finish.
