Questions about this countrys future

Forget the UAW and the Big 3.

Everything in this country is turning to pure crap. We can hardly make anything for ourselves anymore. We rely on everyone else to support us and make things for us.

How much longer will this country go on? I'm serious! Nobody really helps one another anymore and its really sad. Nobody shops their lables and supports their American people.

If the Big 3 fail then we are just totally DONE. We will go into a depression and never recover. Our standard of living will continue to get worse and our kids won't have a very bright future ahead of them.

This is different than the great depression. We are in fierce competition with other now developed countries who want what we have.

Will anyone wake up? Will there be a time soon where Americans can band together and work together?

I really want to know what other people think.

The global economy is not a zero-sum game. You may want to read some primers on international trade. Global trade can benefit everyone. Also, markets are self-correcting. If America becomes as poor as you think it will and other countries get richer than America, then we will have cheaper labor and start to manufacture more.

Why is everybody so down on the United States all the time? Jesus we have the biggest economy in the world and still manufacture trillions of dollars worth of goods. Do you really believe the doom and gloom that everything is imported? If so how the hell do we have a 14 trillion dollar gdp and a 1 trillion dollar trade deficit while being one of the worlds biggest exporters? Does not compute!

Well I for one work in the manufacturing industry.

I work for Caterpillar a very big company. I make it okay but people used to get paid WAY more that worked for CAT. Now people are making about 1/2 what they used to. Lots of jobs are now outsourced.

Lots of bigger companies are shipping jobs and work overseas at an alarming rate. It will soon bite us big time. Yes we still make alot. But that will change if the auto makers don't succeed.

Why is everyone so down on the US?

The US isn't the same no more. Its every man for himself. We don't work together or agree on much. Its just horrible if you ask me.

Global trade? Its good I agree but we import way too much. We need to be more independent and make more things ourselves.

Seriously don't let the numbers your reading fool you. This recession is different than years past. We are in more direct fierce competition than we ever used to be. Many more countries are developed now.

Lie, damn lies, and statistics. Statistics like GDP. The US GDP is as much about the ability to consume as it the ability to produce.

When a pharmaceutical company makes a pill that costs $100 here but $5 everywhere else in the world, what is that production truly worth? When Americans can't afford to pay the $100 anymore (or if we have UHC and simply refuse to pay) what happens to GDP?

The same holds true of a large portion of what the US produces now: intellectual property. We generate a lot of things that have little to no value outside of our economy and if it gets to the point we can't afford them it's not like we can sell them in another market. If we don't use a boatload of wheat, someone else will. That doesn't apply to the latest Britney Spears CD.

I also think this has to do with Americans being so dependent on pharmaceuticals. We want a pill to solve everything, and too lazy to do things the natural way. We are becoming a nation of fat lazy slobs.

Everything is going to be OK.
You know why, because weve got the bombs, thats why
2 words, nuclear F'n weapons, OK?
Russia, Germany, Romania, they can have all the economy they want
They can have a big economy cakewalk
Right through the middle of Tiananmen Square
and it wont make a lick of difference
Because weve got the bombs, OK?
