Just got my new hard-drive......

1) Windows 98 is not detecting the drive, however. It is being detected in the BIOS. What do I do?

2) The hard-drive is wailing.....literally. There is this constant high-pitched noise. Do all WD1000BB SE do this?

If you haven't fdisked and formatted the drive the OS won't see it.

I don't know about the wailing noise. After you get it recognized in Win98 (if possible) download and run the WD diagnostics to see if ther is anything wrong with it.

**get the new version of fdisk

Alright, I ran fdisk and things are fine now. Still a few concerns:

1) The drive is still making a lot of noise. Anybody else have similar experiences?

2) How do I verify that I did indeed get the WD1000BB-SE? The label on the drive just says WD1000BB.

I am doing the WD diagnostic tests right now.

i called western digital technical support and had them look up the serial number on my drive. took forever, but it was worth it b/c mine said JB something, and I wanted to make sure I got what I paid for.

re: sound, i am not getting the sound described on my drive.

The JB is also listed as the "special Edition" on Newegg and WD's site. I would be concerned if I received a WD1000BB and paid for a WD1000JB drive.
