questions about snow

hey..this is my first winter in the US and had a few questions:

1) Does snow always hit the windshield and turn into water?? or are there times when it stays in its original ( snowy ) form even after hitting the windshield?

2) i once saw on the news channel, cars doin 360 degree turns ( skidding ) on the interstate due to a storm .. when does that happen?? when there has been a icestorm or what?

3) Is snow 50% ice and 50% water???

Im sorry if these questions sound stupid..

it depends on the temperature during snowfall. if its near the freezing mark, or slightly above the snow might not stick and turn into water upon landing

but if its cold enough it sticks, and thats when the fun begins

too bad we only have had 2 inches of snow here

If the windshield is cold enough, it'll stick.

When the driver is stupid.

3) Is snoww 50% ice and 50% wateR???

It's 100% ice.

360 turns are usually caused by ice storms or snow that melted (warm afternoon) then turned to ice (cold night + morning). your best bet is to stick to major roads, only drive as fast as you feel comfortable with, and go slow on sharp turns.

1) No. only when the interior temp of the car is that much different than the outside
2) This only happens when people suck as driving in bad conditions. think of it like this: drive too fast---drive straight, you may go out-of-control(spin). - drive slow, less likely to drive out of control (spin). Don't drive, very unlikely to drive out of control (spin).

snow is bad. snow+ice=badder. if the temp is around 32ºF (0ºC), the best advise is not to dirve uness you have a tracked vehicle.

well whats the difference between snow and ice if snow is 100% ??

f the windshield is cold enough, it'll stick.
No. only when the interior temp of the car is that much different than the outside

hmmm can u please elaborate??? if i had an outside temp of -10 degrees celcius with heater on inside my car, would the snow ever stick?

thanks much for ur replies

1. if it is cold enough, or if your windshield is already iced over, then it will stay snowy and stick to the ice.

2. going to wallgreens with my sister we skidded and almost did a full 360 (about a 290 if my guess)

3.its almost all ice. if it is a little on the warm side (for it snowing, still 32 degrees F or 0 degrees celcius) and then it turns to slush.

Hey, that's my favorite drink!

Look into buying snow tires. The right snow tires will give you an unbelievable increase in driving performance during the winter.

Freezing rain = worstest.

Much more dangerous than snow.

Hey did you get hit last wednesday/Thursday? Thankfully it missed us -we've had enough Ice Storms for the year already. Time for some real snow again though 🙂

1. If it is snowing really hard it'll build up also
2. answered
3. really fluffy ice, otherwise just frozen raindrops.

Usually snow will (a) bounce off the windshield or (b) melt on the windshield when you are driving. That is what a defroster is for. It heats the windshiled to prevent freezing on the windshield.

The most dangerous driving is on ice. Rain that freezes once it hits the ground is difficult to drive on (you get the same stituation if it snowed, the snow melts in the sun dring the day, and refreezes into ice at night). The only thing worse is if there is a nice layer of ice and then it snows on top of it. Your tires slide on the snow and attempt to get traction on the ice underneath. It can be very difficult to control the car in that situation.

Snow is just like small pieces of thinly shaved ice.

okay, want to know about snow? Take a car with RWD, no traction control and summer ultra sport tires out on an interstate in a snowstorm. Instant expert or instant death. Whatever doesen't kill you will make you l33ter 😉
