Questions about security applications

Hi,

I am building my new computer, it is run on an AMD 64 3500+, and I obviously want to keep it very secure online. What applications would you suggest best for protection against viruses and other problems online? Should I just get a firewall? What one specifically? Should I get Norton Anti Virus? I am open to all suggestion on what to buy, THANKS

For antivirus, use the freeware Antivir
for firewall, use either of the following (both freeware) Sygate or Keiro.

if you have a router then you most likely have a hardware firewall. if you do have a hardware firewall then don't worry about getting a software one. the only thing i'd recommend is using firefox instead of ie and getting adaware, both of which are free. i wouldn't even worry about an antivirus really. just occassionally scan at housecall.trendmicro.com should be more than enough.
