Questions about rifles

There are .22 Magnum rounds as well (have an 8 shot Mag revolver that's a blast to shoot).

It's just a bit more than firing a BB gun as far as kick goes. I'm not a big guy, but I move more from pulling the trigger back than from the actual recoil, there's just nothing to them. Still dangerous without a back drop as they can go a mile or so (no idea, but it's a long way and something to remember since they seem so weak).

Last set of ammo I bought for a .22 was regular rimfire .22 Hornaday brand. 500 rounds for $9.99. Super cheap.

And building on Amish and Lalakai... the problem with the .22 bullet is it's limited stopping power. Really not a good weapon for self-defense. It is, however, a great weapon if you are first learning to shoot. It has almost no recoil (I would say none, but it does have a little), the bullet is great for shooting short distances so that you can get the feel of aiming and leading, if you're firing against moving targets, and the guns are cheap, along with the ammo. So that if you find you don't really like it you're not out a great deal of money. My father, twenty years ago, started me on BB and pellet guns and I moved up in calibers from there. The gun I learned to shoot with, however, before I started using larger calibers, was a Ruger .22 LR Bolt-action.

.223 is fine and good, but it's really not all that affordable to shoot. You're looking at $175+ for 1000 rds, unless you roll your own (which a new shooter is not going to want to do). I can blow through 100 rds in my AR15 easily in an hour, a day of shooting my ar15 would be seriously hard on my wallet if I didn't reload. You can buy a whole lot of 22lr ammo for $175

In TX it is (was when I checked anyway) illegal to use .22 of any type on anything bigger than a rabbit. I won an M700 Remington chambered for .22-250. Was killer. Harris adjustable bipod and Leopold (sp?) 3-9x40. I don't do hunting but one of the wardens said it's a no no to use them on large game, even if it's a 250. It's one sweet round though. I've never seen another round as loud as it is. I never used it and the ammo was expensive so it was sold.

Guns are a bit expensive too While OA makes good stuff, I think the top rifle is the AR10T right now. No hands on with it, but just what I've seen.

Nice weapon, accurate, lots of fun: Ruger .22-250 Semi-Auto, comes with a 10 round clip, can be upgraded to a 30 shot banana (pre-gun law edition)

Old West Style, accurate, light, lots of fun, decent stopping power: 30-30 Winchester Lever action. Good for anything from varmants, to deer, to man.

BTW: If that is actually you on the HOT or NOT.....I must say.....impressive.

Coins are fun too....I always liked the Morgan silver dollars myself. But I gave up both coins and guns for Computers and Swords.....gotta have a passion.....mise well be expensive ones

Ruger 10/22, even a gun I can maintain well. If you look around, you can find 50 round mags. You can probally find a new one for $160 or so, a bunch of ammo for $10.

Didn't have the knock down of the 30-30s/.300s/and other "normal" rounds used for hunting large game. Was letting to many animals live after they got shot, only to run off and die unclaimed I'll see if I can find the energy for those rounds. I think the .250 is one of the fastest rounds out there though, it just doesn't have a ton of stopping power.

Ok, a quick search shows a .308 168gr having about double the muzzle energy of a 22-250 40gr. At 100yards I'd guess it to be just under double considering the weights, but it's still considerably more powerful.

On the reverse side though, the 22-250 is loads faster at the muzzle (and probably down range as it's lighter?). .40 gr 22-250 doing about 4000fps while the .308 doing 2500 or so.

Not really. With a heavier slug you gain mass. Mass the translates into stopping power (knocks the animal on it's ass). A small, fast round will just pass straight through the animal, so unless you hit it in a vital area, it will just get up and walk away and bleed to death.

Yeah, that's what I meant. You lose stopping power with the smaller slugs. I guess I didn't type what I meant real well. Anyway, that's why a .22 isn't real good for self-defense. You shoot somebody with it, and unless you plug them in a vital area they're going to keep on coming. Like I said earlier, they're the best guns to use when you're learning, and they're great to shoot because the ammo's so cheap. But I wouldn't want to be using one to defend my family.
