Questions about replacing a cpu heatsink/fan

Yesterday my PC shutdown from what I believe to be overheating of the CPU. I opened the case and I noticed there was a faint odor of something burning and I also noticed when the power was on the fan over the cpu was very noisy. Also the fans on the back of the case were spinning erratically (its an old PC). So today I went out and bought a new cpu heatsink/fan (Antec).

My question is how do I remove the old heatsink? Also do I need to put any compound on the cpu when I put the new heatsink in place?

more than likely, you probably have one of those old school metal clips to secure the heatsink. push down and out on the clip and it should unhook from the zif socket. clean off the cpu with some rubbing alcohol. your new heatsink probably already comes with some compound either in a tube or already has it on the bottom of the heatsink.

just thought of another question, would it make a difference if I removed the fan from the new heatsink and put it on the old one? (I don't have any thermal paste)

There's a pad on the bottom of the heatsink that was covered with plastic, is that the adhesive I need to secure the heatsink?

you shouldn't re-use old thermal paste anyway. you'll need to buy some new thermal paste if your new heatsink didn't include it.

Hi, You pull the plastic cover off the HS pad and just put it on. It takes the place of HS compound. I prefer to remove the pad and use real HS compound. Luck, Jim
