I've been using the ON Whey protein powder, and I usually mix it with a couple eggs, some milk, and a banana or apple. Also, I mix some with milk before I go to bed. From what I've read, the milk causes the protein to be absorbed slower, taking more like six to eight hours to absorb.

My question is this: how long does it take whey protein to be absorbed normally?

How long should I wait before drinking dairy products, to make sure the protein is immediately available to my body after a workout?

Honestly, don't worry about it. There's plenty of research coming out showing a slower digestion rate is better post workout anyway.

What I would worry about is getting enough total calories and enough protein, and placing the majority of your calories around your workout is a good idea as well. There are so many things that effect absorption rate that I really wouldn't worry about it.

While I agree with KoolDrew about not worrying too much absorption rate and diet is much more important, I'm gonna have to say that the body wants protein the most right after a workout. I'm up for reading this research though.

My understanding is that whey is a quick digesting protein, while casein, which is found in milk, is a slow digesting one. You definitely want both, with whey being awesome right after a workout when your body needs to refuel, and casein being great before bed as it keeps your metabolism going and prevents your body from fasting.
