Questions About Overclocking

Hi, my name is inspire, and I am a noob.

So, I'm ready to start overclocking and I'm following Zebo's guide. Seems simple enough. However some of my BIOS options differ in terminology, and since I'm not particularly savvy on some of this stuff, I wanted some confirmation. I also have some other questions, but I'll get to them in a minute. I'm using my BIOS to overclock - if that's wrong, please tell me as nicely as you can...

Let me tell you what I can find in my BIOS options (btw - rig's in the sig):

CPU Frequency
CPU Voltage
CPU Multiplier
DDR2 Voltage
Memory Clock Speed
Lots of Memory Timing Settings

Now, I assume that CPU Frequency = HTT. Is that right?

Also, the Memory clock speed only lets me pick between 400, 533, 667, and 800 MHz. How do I tweak with the memory settings with that?

One last thing - What is a memory divider and how do I set one up? I can't find anything in my BIOS or mobo documentation that lets me play with memory dividers.

Running your memory slower than your fsb/HTT is running a memory divider. If you're wanting to overclock, you do it exactly the same way with an AM2 chip as you do with a Skt. 939 chip. The only difference will be in the speed and timings of your RAM. Everything else is identical, so just follow Zebo's guide.

HTT is your base frequency, 5 X HTT = 1000 (default). CPU Multiplier X HTT = CPU Core Frequency
Let's say you have 800MHz memory, so you go into the BIOS and it says you have 800MHZ memory so you change it to 667MHz. Now your memory is running HTT X 4 X 667/800

😕 Are you sure? Stock HTT for me is 200 MHz. Where does the 4 come in?

For me, this would be...

200x4x800 = 64000 ??? Did you mean HTT x 4 = 667/800? As in, 200x4=800???

@akshayt - That makes sense... But how can I calculate what divider each speed setting (800 / 667 / 533 / 400) is for me? Would those dividers be analogous to yours?

@myocardia - this is my first OC, and I've never owned a 939 system. So, I appreciate it, but I can't get much out of what you're saying because I don't understand how to overclock a 939...😕

I think I'm getting ahead of myself here - my question about how I change the RAM speed to figure out my Max Memory Speed for the isolate part of Zebo's guide still remains... Anyone care to take a crack at it?

EDIT: @Pederv - Oh.... wait. I think I get it. A memory divider basically is the ratio of the CPU Multiplier to the Memory multiplier? 😕 I'm sorry I'm not getting it guys - I may take a break and try googling for awhile...



 
Memory clock speed is your divider. AM2's DDR2 memory is quad pumped (4x), thats why at stock settings your memory is running DDR800 HTT 200 x 4 = DDR800. The DDR800 default setting is also refered to as 1:1 which means your memory speed increases equal with each increase in HTT x4. So if you use the DDR800 setting and increase you HTT to 220, you memory speed will be 220x4= DDR880.

The memory clock speeds below DDR800 are your lower dividers. For example is you set your mem speed to DDR667 and increase your HTT to 220 your memory speed will be
220x667/800x4= DDR733. With the same HTT of 220 if you drop the mem speed to DDR533, you memory would be 220x533/800x4= DDR586

EDIT: Yes, I've read through Zebo's guide and now I see how to do everything. Not to say I won't have questions / problems later. But, for now, I understand it all. Thanks guys!
