Questions about outdoor running in winter

First off, here's a little background information about my exercise program and diet. I currently eat about 1500 cal/day, with 60% of that coming from carbs, and the other 40 is split down the middle between fats and prots. I'm also doing the 3 day on / 1 day off body building program on the Bowflex. About 45 mins/day takes care of chest/shoulders (day 1), back/arms (day 2) and legs/trunk (day 3).

I know it looks like a pretty good program, but i don't feel like it's enough. And i have the time for more, so why not right? So i was thinking of doing a little running around the hood in the evenings, on the same days my exercise program falls on. Maybe like a half-hour every night, nothing major, but it would do me good, right? Or would that be overkill?

And what kind of equipment would i need for this? I've seen people running in winter before, but i imagine the ground is pretty slippery? Would anyone care to recommend a specific pair of running shoes that would suit the terrain (asphalt)? And what kind of clothing would i need - how warm? Do i have to avoid getting really hot while running, or be more worried about getting too cold? I'm thinking of getting one of those thick hoodies, plus a t-shirt underneath, and a pair of regular running pants, perhaps warmer ones?

Easier than it sounds actually. Banana shake for breakfast, all the chicken/turkey with rice/potatoes i can eat for dinner, plus two whole-wheat turkey sandwiches for supper. I'm also supposed to throw in two snacks to get that up to 1500, but i'm barely hungry enough for supper anyway. Hmm come to think of it, i think i'm eating about 1300, which is borderline. Probably the reason my head started to hurt while working out today.

I'm not a dietician by any means, but how did you formulate your diet/exercise routine? 1500 seems a tad low. If you plan to start running I would think you should increase your caloric intake


 
Don't run on ice. No shoes are good enough. You will eventually fall or pull something.

The only real danger in cold weather is frostbite. Protect the extremities. Cover your ears and fingers well. An overlooked problem is the, er, ahem, "private" parts. Genitals are very prone to frostbite and very painful. Recommended is a good jock and two pairs of shorts or compression shorts. I'm serious, this happens a lot more often than you would think.

With a vigorous exercise program, you should be nearer 2000 calories. You need the energy to get your metabolism and burn up.
 
unless there's a whole bunch of ice on the ground you wont really need a different type of running shoe.
i wouldn't wear anything more really than a sweat shirt, undershirt and, sweat pants... you'll find that after running for a while that you'll start to get too hot with anything else.. when we run in the morning for pt we actually just do it in shorts and a shirt even though its freezing out b/c after running for about 10mins we start to sweat anyway.

I also dont know if its suggest a good idea running on the days you are doing your leg work outs, or atleast right afterwards... i'd suggest running like in the morning right after you wake up or like an hour or two before you go to bed at night...

i dont how much you weigh but it sounds like you need atleast another 1000 calories day in that diet, esp if you plan to be running on top of your lifting routine.
 
when i lived in nebraska, it used to get to minus 50 w/ windchill and i'd still run w/ my dad when home...the only thing u had to do besides dress warm was to make sure to wear a scarf or something over your mouth and nose....inhaling air like that when so cold and exerting yourself can cause frostbite to your nasal passages and all the way down to your bronchioles if cold enough, so the scarf warms it a little bit so it doesn't hurt so much to breath heavy. not to mention it provides something to catch your snot when your nose starts running uncontrollably (it will, i promise)
 
Where do you live and how cold does it get?

I am most comfortable running when it's just above freezing in just a t-shirt and shorts. Going at a pretty good clip ensured that I never overheated, yet kept warm enough to keep going. The cold air is very refreshing when you run.
 
Don't run outside in the winter, especially not in shorts. Those people just look dumb. We always roll down window and yell "dumb ass" like Red on "That 70s show" to them and they get all confused. It is really funny. I live in a college town BTW, this isn't something I would do to an adult.

in regards with what to wear, look into snap pants. Have them buttoned up all the way when you start and as you start to heat up take some snaps off, that's what I always did when I ran when it was cold outside
