Questions about OEM versions of Windows XP

I've been really wanting to get a copy of Windows XP Home OEM the reason being is that i can install it on a new hdd and be able to reformat at any whim just incase something happens. Will I be able to do this with an OEM copy?

Yes, OEM versions are the same as full retail software-wise. But the license is tied to the piece of hardware that you buy the OEM software with.

It is technically no different than the full retail version that you can buy. But the license is different. It requires that you can only purchase the OEM version when buying a piece of hardware, such as a motherboard, hard drive or cpu (although some stores will sell it to you with the purchase of a cable).

So your saying if i change the motherboard or something I cant use the copy anymore?

If you bought it with that motherboard, yes to be legal the software has to go with the hardware.

An OEM liscence applies when using a new: motherboard, processor, memory, hdd, video card, floppy disk drive or optical drive, as long as the OEM liscence and the new component are invoiced together.
