I am working on building a new gaming machine and would like anyones opinion about the PSU wattage to use for this build. The components being used are as follows:
Case: Antec Nine Hundred
Motherboard: ASUS P5K3 DELUXE/WIFI-AP
Video Card x2: MSI NX8800Ultra-T2D768E-HD-OC
Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 Conroe 2.93GHz (May hold out for a new Penryn)
Memory x2: Kingston HyperX 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1375
Hard Drives x2: Update Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM
DVD ROM: LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium

Considering this PSU, but concerned it about quietness and effectiveness:
Thermaltake Toughpower W0132RU ATX12V / EPS12V 1000W

Any other comments or suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks for the insite.

Heh, you loaded or something? The p5k is a nice mobo, but why does it have to be the deluxe? The dual ultra's is nice, I'd go single gtx though, and spend 600$ in 3 months on a 9800gtx when nvidia releases it. Why the ddr3 ram? You do realize that highend ddr2 ram performs equally as ddr3, and comes cheaper? Anything more then ddr2 1066mhz is overkill btw. The x6800 is a stupid purchase as well, the q6600 comes for 300$ and with a decent aftermarket cooler it will hit 3ghz no problem. A simple arctic cooler 7 pro could keep the q6600 cool enough at 3ghz.

Now that I think about it, is this build going to be for mad overclocking or something? There's really no other reason to buy all that ddr3, the x6800 etc etc.

Anyways, about the power supply, you apparently like overkill, and 1000W is double overkill. My suggestion would be this one, the best brand in the industry, and will deliver nearly twice the amount of watts you will actually be using :p

You have a good point about the GTX card. The ultimate goal here is to include a new Penryn 3.33GHz, at 1333MHz FSB. This is part of the purpose for the DDR3. The other is so it will be overkill/ overclocking. And you thoughts on the PSU are good, I was also considering at 750W PSU, but one thing I have come to like in my other builds are modular cabling systems. It keeps the tower neat and cool. Still can't bring myself to connecting a water tower to all that electricity. Something to do with my childhood teachings I quess.

Thanks for the input.

another suggestion. I didn't know ddr3 was necesary for Penryn, btw. It's going to be a die shrink of the c2d, with some extra features, with an fsb of 1333, which means that ddr2 667mhz will be able to give it all the memory bandwith it could possibly need. With ddr2 1066 you would have enough memory bandwith to run a 3.33ghz penryn at an fsb of 533 before you need to start overclocking the ram, and ddr2 1066 often overclocks to 1200mhz or so. At an fsb of 533 and a multiplier of 11, you would be looking at 5ghz +. You gonna hit 5ghz + ? The ddr3 would allow you to hit almost 7ghz lol. Oh well, your money ;)

I'd rather get 4gb at ddr 1066 speed then 2gb of ddr3 1333mhz. Any money saved could be put towards some more storage, like 2 500gb's in raid 0 or whatever if you just wanna do crazy stuff.

Oh, and one last suggestion, I think the creative soundcard gets the hiccups in vista x64, might wanna look into purchasing a different soundcard.
