Sometimes I have problems getting a wireless laptop to switch to the stronger signal access point in networks. This only seems to be a problem with Windows as far as I can tell. My PowerBook isn't having this problem. When the laptop does do auto-switching, it checks the other access point and switches back if the signal isn't strong enough. Sometimes it won't switch back and it will stick with the weaker signal instead. During any switches from access point to access point, there is a hangup, where there is no connection for a brief time. I have some questions that maybe some of you can answer if you have encountered these problems before.
1. Is there a problem using a router/access point and a secondary access point that doesn't hand out IPs? The one time I can think of a good, clean wireless setup with multiple APs is when we used (2) APs, neither of which were the router. I was also using nothing but PowerBooks though, so I'm not sure.
2. Do the AP SSIDs make a difference? I don't believe so, but normally I've seen each AP have a different SSID.
3. Should the channels be different on the APs?
Any help is appreciated as this problem is driving me nuts.
