Questions about living in Richmond, VA...

I've got a strong lead for a job in Richmond, VA. Before going down that path, I've quickly looked at houses on Zillow and noticed something confusing to me: most houses do not have a garage. How the hell do you maintain a vehicle there if there isn't a garage? Did I miss something?

Also, what else should I know about Richmond, or Virginia as a whole?

Im from that area. We have a lot more car ports than garages. Depending on where in Richmond you are, there may be restrictive rules due to historic buildings etc.

An older established area as far as homes concerned. Expect to be limited when making a purchase in that regard or look to pay higher and further out for some more modern/custom.

Richmond does not get the blasting heat like AZ/FL or the heavy snow like MN/WI so garages were not that common in older homes.

That and Richmond area describes a lot of south VA so until you know where you would be working its hard to say. If you do then search near there as traffic can get bad there. Not NoVA bad but still 95 gets jammed during rush if you need to use that.

Are you looking in the city proper or the suburbs? Southside, The Fan, West End, etc. all have very different neighborhood feels and houses reflect this. It gets even more extreme if you go into the counties that aren't Henrico or Chesterfield like Goochland or Powhatan. Also, where is this potential job located?

I'm sure there are new developments with garages...just depends on your price range and how far from the center of town you're willing to drive.

Climate is great in the SouthEast....(north of Georgia/south of Pennsylvania). Just be aware that occasional hurricanes do make landfall and cause storms....also, occasional snow does makes its way down in the winter....so be prepared for a few good storms a year. (wind/rain + snow)

Every time I drive through Richmond (about once a year) it feels very ghetto.

i agree. i just drove past it twice this past week going to/from NC. both times i told my wife "i would not want to live around here.".

that said, i'm sure there are nice parts of it. i've only seen what you can see from 95 which just looks very run down and industrial for the most part.

Do a google search for golf courses and find a golf course community. They must have garages there to protect vehiculars from golf ball carnage.

If you live in the city or "Fan" district, you will find no garages on houses. If you move to the burbs there are garages a plenty. I have a 2 car garage. I have lived here for 15 years. Ask away.
